English Archery ‘hit Gold’ with Quintic software in Delhi

March 19th, 2010 | English Archery, Quintic Video Software

Quintic Testimonial : Paul Atkins of English Archery

“Quintic was chosen after comparison with other similar products. The demo was well presented covering all areas. Time had been taken to obtain clips of Archers so the presentation was personalised to us and our requirements. No pressure to buy was put on us at any time, being a British company also had its attractions. The licensing, registering and setting up of the programme for our athletes was very straight forward allowing them to be up and using it in a short space of their precious time. Within 2 hours the archers were using the system with confidence and exploring different areas that it could be applied to.

Over the 09/10 Winter training camps Quintic have attended with their pressure plate and in conjunction with the Casio high speed cameras we have been able to rectify faults and improve our teams performance. Their attitude has always been helpful and friendly regularly working longer hours to ensure all our needs had been met before departing. Backup has been excellent, always someone at the end of the phone to answer any queries we have had. Overall we have found a British company supplying a product that best suited our requirements.

The Quintic programme is very user friendly allowing the archer / analyst to be up and running with its operation in a short space of time. Our Archers have improved their scores with the aid of Quintic. We have just returned from our Test Event in India in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in October with a pleasing haul of medals, including Gold’s, from Archers who have been benefiting directly from the Quintic Analysis Software for only a few months.”

Andy Rikuenko of English Archery, is currently ranked 4th in the Gentlemen’s Compound GNAS Target Archery rankings for 2009.

Quintic Biomechanics v17 is used to calculate velocity of the arrow along with the technique of the individuals. This is vital to the performance analysis of archery. By knowing these values overall technique can be improved in order to achieve the optimum velocity for the task e.g. in archery hitting the target. By calculating the different types of velocities separately a comprehendible breakdown of the effect of external factors affecting performance can be achieved. As well as this problem areas can be established and in turn rectified. This is fundamental as usually it’s the small mistakes that usually go unnoticed which are responsible for an overall poor technique.

The Quintic® software provides a visual aid for calculating velocity and other kinematic values. It is a useful tool in both coaching and teaching fields as it presents data in an uncomplicated and understandable format thus making it easier for athletes/students to appreciate the velocity mechanism, and how it applies to them in their own field of sport.

All the best for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Delhi from all at Quintic…

Example for QuinticNetball : Chapter 1 – Warm Ups

In Chapter 1, we shall be looking at Warm Ups. I’ve sectioned these into
• Static warm ups with a ball
• Active warm ups without a ball
• Active warm ups with a ball AND
• Relays with a ball

Static Warms ups with a ball – Practice 1 : The Clock

The set Up : In pairs standing 2m a par, Player A is the feeder and Player b the worker .

The Practice : The feeder passes the ball to Player B who holds both hands up at the 12 o’clock position. Player B snatches the ball into the chest and feeds the pass back to the feeder. The practice continues with Player B changing the position of her arms from 1pm round an imaginary clock. The feeder is to concentrate on feeding an accurate pass to Player B’s hands so Player B does not have to move her arms to cleanly catch the ball.

Teaching Points :
The feeder needs to:-
• Step into the pass, transferring their weight from the back to the front foot
• Using a chest pass, position their hands in a W shape behind the ball
• Push through the ball following through to where the ball is to go
The worker needs to
• Stand with feet hip distance apart with soft knees which will ensure they are well balanced throughout the practice
• Fingers are soft and outstretched with the palms of the hands facing the feeder
• Worker is reach for the ball at full extension and snatch the ball into the chest

Common errors to look out for in this practice are:-
• The feeder over stretching the worker putting pressure on pass
• The feeder not stepping into the pass therefore not practicing the correct technique for a chest pass
• The worker waiting for the ball to come to them rather than reaching for the ball and snatching it in

GB World Bobsleigh Champions…

February 22nd, 2009 | Quintic Video Software

Nicola Minichiello and Gillian Cooke won the Women’s World Bobsleigh Championships, which were held at Lake Placid on 20th and 21st February 2009. Whereas the races that make up the eight race World Cup series consist of just two runs, the World Championships reflect the Olympics and consist of four runs, held over two days, and are only held in non-Olympic years. The results are decided on the total time for all four runs, so consistency is crucial.

After the first day, Nicola and Gillian lay in 2nd place, just 0.04 seconds behind Shauna Rohbuck / Elana Meyers of the USA, who would ultimately finish as runners up in the final standings. Although their start times were not the fastest, Nicola and Gillian had the best times in each of their two runs on the second day to finish 0.38 seconds ahead of the USA1 team and 0.62 seconds ahead of the 3rd place Cathleen Martini / Janine Tischer of Germany.

The last time that Great Britain won the World Bobsleigh Championships was back in 1965 when Tony Nash and Robin Dixon (now Lord Glentoran) won the 2-Man title, when the Championships were held at the St Moritz track. Robin Glentoran, who is nowadays President of the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association, described it as a ‘wonderful achievement by the girls’ and said he was ‘really pleased for both girls’.

Twenty six year old Gillian Cooke, who lives in Edinburgh, only came into the sport of bobsleigh this season, after having been discovered by Nicola and enticed away from long jump. Gillian was duly selected with Jackie Gunn to brake for Nicola in the 2008 – 2009 season and now loves the sport of bobsleigh.

Nicola, who is thirty years old and lives in Sheffield, had previously driven to 2nd place in the World Bobsleigh Championships at Calgary in 2005, with Jackie Davies (now Jackie Gunn) as brakewoman. Despite coming close this season, with a 2nd place and two 3rd places in World Cup races, Nicola had never before won a bobsleigh race at World Class level and certainly chose a good time to do it, just one year before the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Winning the World Championships tops a great season for Nicola, who with Gillian and Jackie sharing the brakewoman role, finished 3rd overall in the FIBT 2008 – 2009 World Cup, which is based on the points from all eight World Cup races.

Attempting to finish in the top 10 in the World Championships and so qualify for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, the GB2 pairing of Paula Walker / Kelly Thomas finished the first run in a useful 14th position, but crashed on their second run, after posting a faster start time, and were duly disqualified as the bobsleigh did not cross the finish line.

Quintic Consultancy Ltd would like to congratulate Nicola Minichiello and Gillian Cooke on becoming World Champions and wish to thank the Team Coaches, ‘Gomer’ Lloyd and Peter Gunn of the British Army (husband of Jackie Gunn), and all the Team Minichiello Support Staff for their contribution this season.

by Mark Carter – Performance Coordinator – British Bobsleigh

Nicola Minichiello and Gillian Cooke won the Women’s World Bobsleigh Championships: Lake Placid February 2009.

Putting to the Nth Degree – Ball Roll

February 12th, 2009 | Quintic Ball Roll, Quintic Video Software

Out of one of the foremost biomechanics software laboratories comes a world first. The New Quintic Ball Roll System gives putting coaches and putter custom-fit professionals the kind of analysis tool they’ve never had before. What it means is that golfers need never be uncertain of the performance of their putters again.

The 2009 Quintic Ball Roll software tracks the ball for the first 12″ of the putt. It then instantly and clearly shows the ball speed, sidespin, angular rotation, vertical bounce, launch angle and point at which true roll occurs. Crucially as well – and this is the most significant advance on Quintic’s already pioneering analysis tools – all of the above are reflected graphically and numerically in a way that was formerly only available for full swing analysis software for irons and woods.

Putter manufacturers can use this tool to test their equipment, design better putters, and as a sales tool to show the golf professionals how to increase putter sales over the counter. The over-the-counter part is key. Pros who make a living out of retail and coaching have been victims of “web-watch-time-wasters” for too long. This is the practice whereby customers waste a pro’s time by trying out equipment in the shop and then sourcing the cheapest price on the internet.

Golf professionals will be able to more accurately fit their customers for a putter, give better coaching and sell more putters as part of a demonstrable package. Golfers themselves can all benefit from using the system because they will be getting facts to back up their decision on which putter is performing best and see if any alterations need to be made to fine-tune the putter to their stroke.

Shifting the Putter Paradigm

The brains behind the new software is Dr Paul Hurrion – Quintic MD and biomechanics adviser to top European Tour Pros and bodies like the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI).

“Putting accounts for over 40% of a golfer’s strokes and yet, most players buy a putter by taking a few off the rack and trying them in the shop or on a practice green – often after a bad round,” reasons Hurrion. “Up until now, you could get a vague idea that your ball was skidding and then rolling forward, but there was no actual way to quantify it alongside hook or cut side spin analysis.

“Attaining proper lie and loft will help the ball roll better but there are other factors involved. The ultimate goal is to get the ball to roll as soon as possible with as little side spin as possible. This easy tool shows you exactly what effect the putter is having on the ball. You need to understand what is happening to the golf ball in order to teach putting!”

Another important point is that the software calculates the point at which true roll occurs. Side spin (hook or cut) will have a negative effect on how soon the ball achieves true roll. It’s now possible to know, through this new Quintic Ball Roll Software, that a ball could have more forward rotation at 18″ but not achieve true roll as quickly as a ball that had less rotation at 18″, due to greater sidespin imparted by the putter.

“We introduced the software at the PGA show in Orlando in January 09,” beams Hurrion. “In less than 5 minutes we were able accurately to fit a golfer to the most suitable putter for him – not just from a lie and loft perspective but also as to blade vs mallet, centre shaft vs heel shaft, and face balanced vs toe heavy. Golfers were both amazed and impressed by how simple and easy it was – suddenly they had tangible results that they could see for themselves. Golf Professionals just couldn’t wait for the launch of this Software to enhance their putter fitting and putting coaching capabilities and convert more enquiries.”

The Quintic 2009 Ball Roll Software is available from www.quinticballroll.com. A single licence costs just $1250 and discounts apply for 5 or more licenses or if purchased with other Quintic Video Analysis products. For more information please email: info@quinticballroll.com.
